GRAVITY PASSENGERS
Mafikeng South Africa
June 2010

moving social kinetical experiment

Three gigantic swings, fabricated from used tires, wooden poles and a whole lot of metal bolts and cables, are suspended from Mmabatho Stadium's outer frame. Facing each other, and dangling from a staggering height of twelve meters, the swings carry ten to twenty passengers each to enact an interplay with the forces of gravity and ultimately between passengers amongst themselves.

We used only local material as local gum tree poles, car tyres and the minimal necessary metal connection materials.
All metal work was done by a local engineering company and we asked local assitants to help us with the setup.
All this happened as part of the Cascoland project in Mafikeng where we tried to activate an underused stadium with minimum ressources but still trying to leave behing as much as possible of lasting structures.

Project by Jan Körbes and Thjeu Donders

Post-Cascoland responsibility: Mmabatho Stadium (Mr George Seate, Stadium Manager)
